The Greek language has at least 2 words for knowledge or know – gnosis & epignosis.
Gnosis means experiential knowledge. There has been some contact with a person or an organization. We know a little bit about them by experience. We have opinions & beliefs based on those experiences. Future relationship depends on the nature of those experiences.
I gnosis my dentist . It has been a very positive experience but I can’t say it is a deep, personal relationship.
Epignosis means deep relational knowledge. After 47 years of marriage, 3 children & 4 grandchildren we have epignosis . We have a deep relational knowledge.
The same is true with God. We may have lots of knowledge about & some experiences of Him (gnosis) . How do we get to really know God ? How do we deepen the relationship? How do we epignosis Him?
For my determined purpose is that I may know Him; that I may progressively become more deeply & intimately acquainted with Him, perceiving & recognizing & understanding the wonders of His Person more strongly & more clearly & that I may in that same way come to know the power out-flowing from His resurrection which it exerts over believers & that I may so share His sufferings as to be continually transformed in spirit into His likeness even to His death,in the hope that if possible I may attain to the spiritual and moral resurrection that lifts me out from among the dead even while in the body. (Phil. 3:9-11 AMP)
Moving From Gnosis to Epignosis
How do we develop a deep relational knowledge of God? How do we use our current experience of & beliefs about God & move to a deeper level. ?
Belief is accepting something as true. It implies feeling sure of the truth of , believing something of someone, believing that someone is capable of a particular action. Belief is the launch pad to trust
Trust is the firm belief in the reliability, truth or ability, strength of someone or something.
Trust is acting on belief.
Belief & Trust
Gnosis & Epignosis
Don’t worry about anything.
Pray about everything.
Tell God what you need.
Thank him for all he has done.
Then you will experience God’s peace,
Peace which exceeds anything we can understand.
His peace will guard your heart.
His peace will guard your mind.
As you live in Christ Jesus.
Here is how to use the prayer pattern.
- Read through the pattern slowly one line at a time.
- Write down the thoughts that come as you read
- Repeat at least 5 or 6 times
- Ask God questions such as
- What am I worried about?
- What do You see that I need?
- Sit quietly – until the anxiety changes to peace.
