Tabitha lay on the mat in the corner of the room she shared with her grandchildren. Her daughter Leah had taken the boys & gone to visit her sister Sarah in a nearby town.
Simon Peter & Andrew were out at the synagogue that Wednesday morning. They were meeting with the new teacher. The plan was that they would bring him home for lunch.
Tabitha’s head ached. She felt burning hot one moment & icy cold the next. Tabitha was too weak to stand never mind go to the kitchen to prepare a meal.
If only I had cooked yesterday. Now it is impossible. I thought I would have lots of time this morning. Time to go to the market to get fresh lamb & some of those lovely pomegranates. Time to make fresh bread & a fragrant lentil stew. But now…….
Peter will be so disappointed; so embarrassed. If only …….
Oh no! I hear voices at the door. Peter finds me & sees how sick I am . I hear him telling the teacher .
And then ……………
A Simple Story
After Jesus left the synagogue with James & John, they went to Simon Peter & Andrew’s home. Now Peter’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever. They told Jesus about her right away. So he went to her bedside, took her by the hand & helped her sit up. Then the fever left her & she prepared a meal for them.
These verses grabbed my attention. I look inside the story. What was the woman thinking? Was she embarrassed? Did she feel like a failure that she couldn’t fulfill her tasks as mom in the home? Did it occur to her to pray that God would enable her to get up & cook? Was she the kind of mom that always put her own needs last?
I looked deeper into the story . I asked Jesus what he was saying to me through this story. Two things came to mind.
Little Things & Big Things
Linda, I am interested in the everyday details of your life not just the big picture. I cared that Peter’s mother-in-law wanted to cook for me. I met her everyday, ordinary need.
Pray for Yourself
I realized that I rarely pray for myself. Let me give you an example.
About 10 days ago I had a painful ear infection in my left ear. It was keeping me from sleeping. I had tried several home remedies with no results. It seemed to me that Jesus said- Ask me! So in the middle of the night I put my hand on my left ear & asked Jesus to forgive me for trying to handle the situation myself . I asked him to bring healing to the ear. He did. I went back to sleep.
Two lines from the Lord’s Prayer stand out for me.
Give Me Today My Daily Bread
This is what I need ………..
Forgive Me My Trespasses
Forgive me for trying to handle things myself.
What is Jesus saying to you through this story?
What is your everyday need today?
Are you prone to handling things yourself?
How do you want to respond?
