Writer’s struggle with deciding what to write. Writer Danny Iny said this : “ The emails or blog posts or books I write aren’t so much about what I have to say or to teach. But rather, they are about what you , my readers need help with.”
He went on to suggest we contemplate the following questions.
◦ Who is the one person or group you are writing?
◦ What is their need?
◦ What do you want to say to them?
Paul may have asked God similar questions as he penned his letter to the little group at Ephesus.
In the three years that Paul had been with them, this little group had grown & flourished .
Paul kept hearing about their strong faith in the Jesus & their love for fellow Christians everywhere. Paul constantly thanked God for them.
But something had changed since he left.
While Paul was with them he taught them how to live in the presence & power of Holy Spirit.
He taught & demonstrated how to have a real relationship with Jesus by the infilling of His Spirit.
Paul knew their good deeds. He saw their hard work & their patient endurance. He knew they didn’t tolerate evil people. They had examined the claims of those who said they were apostles but were not. They discovered they were liars & confronted the lies.
They suffered patiently & didn’t quit.
They were good, faithful , hard working men & women. They did their best in trying circumstances.
They were gatekeepers of truth. They didn’t compromise with evil doers. They patiently endured hardship.
What had changed ?
They had become discouraged
They felt like misfits
They felt all alone.
Abandoned by God
Abandoned by people.
Their real relationship with Jesus
Didn’t seem so real anymore.
As a result
They forgot their first love
They didn’t do what they did at first.
They stopped living in relationship with Jesus day by day.
They went back to living out of religious principle.
They Stopped Bringing Light to a Dark World
Their Destination Was Secure
They Were Robbed of Their Destiny
What did Paul do ?
He Reminded Them
He Prayed for Them
5 W’s & H
Who? The Father
What? Father had a plan to bless them
When? Before he even made the earth
Why? So they would bring light to a dark world
Where? In the 9-5 of their daily lives.
How? By loving God & loving people
Ever since I first heard of your strong faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for God’s people everywhere, I have not stopped thanking God for you. I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God.
I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.
I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honour at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms.
When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. That Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him.
I pray that your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.
